Bollgard I and Bollgard II are genetically modified (GM) technologies applied to cotton plants. These technologies involve the insertion of specific genes, known as cry genes, from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) into the cotton plant's genome. The purpose of this genetic modification is to enable the cotton plant to produce insecticidal proteins, thereby conferring inherent resistance against certain lepidopteran pests, primarily the cotton bollworm.
Bollgard I technology incorporates the Cry1Ac gene, which targets the cotton bollworm. Bollgard II is an advanced version that contains two Bt genes, Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab. This dual-gene strategy provides broader protection against a wider range of lepidopteran pests and helps in delaying the development of pest resistance, leading to improved crop yields and reduced reliance on chemical pesticides.
