Medieval History : Religious And Cultural Developments In India (1200-1500 CE)

Q 4 / 17

UPSC CSE Prelims 2019

Consider the following statements :
  1. Saint Nimbarka was a contemporary of Akbar.
  2. Saint Kabir was greatly influenced by Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

EXPLANATION

Correct Option

Statement 1 is incorrect. Saint Nimbarka, a prominent Vaishnavite Bhakti saint and proponent of the Dvaitadvaita philosophy, lived around the 13th century CE. Emperor Akbar reigned from 1556 to 1605 CE. Therefore, Nimbarka was not a contemporary of Akbar.

Statement 2 is incorrect. Saint Kabir, an influential Bhakti saint known for his syncretic philosophy, lived from 1440 to 1518 CE. Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi, a Naqshbandi Sufi reformer, lived from 1563 to 1624 CE. Kabir had passed away before Sirhindi became active, making it impossible for Kabir to have been influenced by Sirhindi. Furthermore, their ideologies differed significantly; Kabir advocated a universal, non-sectarian path, while Sirhindi emphasized strict Islamic orthodoxy.

Since both statements are incorrect, option 4 is the correct answer.

Incorrect Options

Options 1, 2, and 3 are incorrect because they assert the correctness of one or both of the factually inaccurate statements. As explained above, Saint Nimbarka lived centuries before Akbar, and Saint Kabir died before Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi became active, precluding any influence.
