The Namchik–Namphuk coalfields are situated in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, in close proximity to the Indo–Myanmar border. These coalfields are recognized for their reserves of high-grade coking coal. Historically, their operations have been managed by the North Eastern Coalfields (NEC), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. In recent years, the Namchik–Namphuk project has seen renewed focus under national energy reforms, with strategic coal extraction being balanced against tribal rights and forest conservation mandates, as per the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2023.
Meghalaya possesses significant coal reserves, particularly in the Jaintia and Garo Hills regions; however, the Namchik–Namphuk coalfields are not located within this state.
Manipur and Mizoram are not known for the presence of significant or commercially viable coalfields comparable to the Namchik–Namphuk deposits.
